Josie nocked the arrow and pulled back, feeling the tension coursing through her shoulder and down into her fingers. She closed her eyes and inhaled. As she opened her eyes, she exhaled and released the arrow, hitting the target nearly seventy-five meters away.

A light fog hovered over the ground as she retrieved her arrows from the target. She’d been out on the east lawn practicing for hours. She needed to clear her mind, and archery had always given her the solace she craved. But not today. Her mind was still reeling over how Dudley had almost kissed her three days ago.

Almost.

Why hadn’t he?

However, ever since that day, Dudley had gone out of his way to avoid her during the day. He still helped her scout out the cove in the early morning, but he did so with icy politeness.

What had she done wrong?

Perhaps it had been her imagination. Maybe she only thought that Dudley wanted to kiss her. What if he believed she was too brazen? After all, she did hold his hand and place her hand on his cheek.

She stifled a groan as she returned the arrows to the quiver strapped to her back and walked back to the line. She hated questioning her actions, but she honestly did not know why Dudley was avoiding her. Clearly, she’d done something to upset him.

Josie removed an arrow from her quiver and nocked it. She aimed at the target and released it, hitting the center target.

Why should it matter if Dudley was ignoring her? They didn’t have an understanding between them. Nor did she want one. She had no interest in the handsome Lord Dudley.

That was a lie.

Her feelings for him were starting to deepen, but she knew he didn’t feel the same. Not that she wanted them to. She had no interest in pursuing the boorish lord. Although, she had seen a softer side of him, a vulnerable side, which she found extremely attractive.

Josie was tired of arguing with herself about Lord Dudley. He was just a distraction, and she didn’t have time for those. With her decision made, she walked up to the target and removed the arrow.

As she approached the manor, Clarke walked out the main door to relieve her of her longbow and quiver of arrows.

“Did you enjoy yourself, miss?” Clarke asked as he accepted the longbow.

She nodded. “I did. Thank you.”

“I’m afraid you’ve missed breakfast,” the butler informed her. “I’m sure the cook would be willing to prepare something for you.”

“I’m sure she would,” she replied. “I intend to visit Mrs. Finch down in the kitchen anyway.”

Clarke tipped his head. “I will ensure that the longbow is put away for you.”

“Thank you, Clarke,” she said as she entered the main door. She strode across the entry hall towards the servant’s hallway, walking down the narrow set of stairs leading to the kitchen.

She entered and saw Mrs. Finch standing next to the hearth, stirring the contents of a large pot. She seemed quite focused on her task.

“Good morning, Mrs.
